Indonesia's Marine Sanctuaries Safeguard Biodiversity, Empower Coastal Communities
In Indonesia's Sunda Banda Seascape, marine protected areas (MPAs) are vital for conserving the diverse underwater life. Researchers looked into 85 MPAs to see how well they safeguard the marine environment, monitor fishing activities, and support local communities. These MPAs cover 35% of the set national MPA target and protect a significant portion of coral reefs, seagrasses, and mangroves. The study found that while these ecosystems are relatively healthy, traditional fishing methods are widely used, with destructive fishing posing a major threat. To ensure effective marine conservation, it's crucial to not only expand MPAs but also improve their management and consider the needs of local communities and the environment.
