Optimized nitrogen fertilizer boosts wheat yields and protein, transforming food security in China
In a study on growing winter wheat in a specific area of China, researchers wanted to find the best way to use nitrogen fertilizer to boost grain and protein yields. They tested different ratios of fertilizer applied during planting and later in the season. They discovered that using a 50%:50% ratio of fertilizer between planting and later stages helped wheat plants move nitrogen better, increased certain enzyme activities, and improved nitrogen levels in the grains. As a result, this method led to higher grain and protein yields, showing a positive link between nitrogen management, enzyme activity, and grain quality. So, using this fertilizer strategy could help farmers grow better-quality wheat with more protein content.
