Intensified crop rotations in Pampas boost productivity and profits.
Intensifying and diversifying crop rotations in the Pampas can significantly increase productivity and profits compared to growing just soybeans. By planting a variety of crops in sequence, farmers can make better use of environmental resources throughout the year, leading to 41-51% higher yields on average. Despite higher costs, the increased diversity and intensity of crops resulted in 10-13% higher profits. This approach not only benefits farmers economically but also has positive environmental impacts. To fully realize these benefits, policymakers should focus on creating new markets for the extra produce.
