Hydrogen-powered future could slash emissions and transform transportation
Hydrogen-based fuels like hydrogen, ammonia, and synthetic hydrocarbons can help reduce carbon emissions from industries and transportation. By looking at different global energy scenarios, researchers found that by 2050, these fuels will make up less than 5% of the world's energy demand in 2°C scenarios. However, in stricter plans to limit warming to 1.5°C without carbon capture, this can increase to 10-15%. The transportation sector will be the biggest user of hydrogen, followed by industry and power. Some synthetic hydrocarbons made from hydrogen and captured carbon will also become popular as clean fuels. Using a mix of hydrogen-based fuels, electricity, and biofuels together is an effective way to reduce emissions across different sectors, showing that a combined strategy is crucial for successful decarbonization.
