Heavier Electric Vehicles Cause Costly Road Damage, Threaten Infrastructure
To reduce global emissions, we need eco-friendly vehicles. Battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars are two options. Batteries make vehicles heavier, leading to more road wear. Research shows battery vehicles cause 30-40% more road wear than regular cars. Hydrogen vehicles only cause a 6% increase. The heaviest vehicles, like buses and trucks, contribute most to road damage. Lighter vehicles, such as cars and motorcycles, have little impact. Governments may need to regulate heavier vehicles to lessen road wear costs.
