Climate warming accelerates glacier erosion, impacting surface debris and mass balance.
High-alpine glaciers are losing stability due to climate change, causing more erosion of rock walls above them. This affects glacier response to climate change. Scientists studied debris on glaciers to estimate how fast the rock walls are eroding. They collected samples from five Swiss glaciers and found that erosion rates varied between glaciers. Some glaciers showed increasing erosion rates over time, while others remained stable. Differences in rock wall characteristics like orientation and history of melting may explain these variations. The researchers are now investigating how factors like rock type and slope angle influence erosion rates.
