Legume residues outshine maize straws as superior ruminant feed option.
Legume residues like cowpea and lablab leaves are nutritious for ruminants and can be a good supplement to their diets. A study compared these legumes with maize straws to see how well they break down and how much ruminants like them. Lablab had the highest protein content, while Betswit had the most condensed tannins. Lablab was the most easily digested and most liked by the goats. The amount of phenolics in the feeds predicted how much the goats would eat and enjoy them. Overall, all legumes tested are good options to improve the quality of ruminants' diets when combined with low-quality roughages like maize straws.
