Gender-diverse youth report earlier sexual initiation and riskier behaviors than peers.
Gender-diverse youth in a Pittsburgh school district were studied to understand their sexual behaviors and orientation. Among 3091 students, 281 (9.1%) identified as gender-diverse. These youth started having sex at younger ages and had similar numbers of sexual partners compared to cisgender peers. Gender-diverse youth used hormonal contraception more but also reported higher rates of no contraception use. Transmasculine youth were mostly heterosexual or sexual minority, while transfeminine youth were mostly heterosexual or sexual minority.
