Overwintering fires on the rise in Siberia, impacting boreal fire regimes.
Overwintering fires in eastern Siberia are becoming more common due to warming temperatures. These fires, which burn during the winter months, accounted for 3.2% of the total burned area from 2012 to 2020. In 2020, they made up 7.5% of the burned area. Overwintering fires have different characteristics than fires caused by lightning or humans, so they need to be considered separately in fire models for predicting future fire patterns in the region.
