South Africa has managed to maintain a strong democracy despite global trends towards authoritarianism. The country's recent local-government elections were highly competitive, showing that single-party dominance is not inevitable. Citizens have been able to influence policies and governance positively for over 25 years. Although South Africa faces significant challenges, its multiracial democracy serves as a model for effective democratic institutions.
