Social capital in local communities in Seoul, South Korea affects their ability to respond to disasters. By measuring civic engagement, informal networks, and trust, researchers found that communities with higher social capital have more disaster relief volunteers. This means that communities where people are involved in community issues and trust each other are better prepared to respond effectively in times of crisis.
