Rhizosphere soils hold key to enhanced carbon and nitrogen cycling.
The study looked at how carbon and nitrogen are broken down in soil near plant roots compared to soil further away. They found that in the soil near roots, carbon and nitrogen breakdown are strongly linked, while in other soil, they are not. This connection is likely due to interactions between roots and soil, leading to higher levels of certain substances that help break down carbon and nitrogen. This shows that soil near plant roots behaves differently than other soil when it comes to breaking down carbon and nitrogen.
