Cartilage cells preserved better with DMSO and serum, boosting tissue engineering.
Combining dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) with different cryoprotectants improves the preservation of cartilage cells. By testing various freezing solutions on cattle ear cartilage cells, researchers found that using 10% DMSO and 40% serum in dextran or dextrose solution or DMEM resulted in the highest cell viability. The concentration of serum and supplementing DMSO with dextran, dextrose, or DMEM were crucial for successful cryopreservation of bovine cartilage cells.
