Life course criminalization perpetuates violence and health crises for marginalized mothers.
The article explores how being labeled as a criminal, like being in a gang, can harm the health of Chicana/Latina mothers in South Central Los Angeles. The researchers talked to 13 mothers to learn how being criminalized affects their families over time. They found that violence from different sources, like the law and society, can make it hard for these mothers and their families to stay healthy. The mothers shared how their health, family life, and being seen as criminals are all connected, and how they use their strength and beliefs to keep going.
