Soil moisture observations alone not enough to predict hydrological fluxes accurately.
The study tested a land surface model using soil moisture data from field sites. They found that using soil moisture alone to predict hydrological fluxes leads to large uncertainties. The model performed better when hydraulic properties were directly assigned, but uncertainties were still high. The researchers recommend using additional information, like improved soil hydraulic properties estimation, to reduce uncertainties in predicting fluxes.
