Study reveals main sources of urban water contamination in China
The study investigated nitrate sources in urban storm runoff in Wuxi, China. Nitrogen concentrations were higher in drainage pipelines and channels compared to surface runoff. Nitrate sources varied during different runoff stages, with sewage contributing more as runoff progressed. After 30% of runoff, sewage, fertilizers, and soil nitrogen were carried into surface runoff, while in residential areas, this happened earlier at 25% of runoff. This research helps us understand where nitrate pollution in urban storm runoff comes from, which is crucial for reducing water contamination.
