Grassland disturbances increase diversity by limiting dominant tussock grasses.
Grasslands in Southern Brazil were studied to see how disturbances like fire and grazing affect plant diversity. One grassland had no disturbances for 16 years, while the other had regular disturbances. The grassland without disturbances had more plant species and a more even distribution of plants. The disturbed grassland had fewer dominant tussock grasses, allowing other plant species to thrive. Overall, disturbances like fire and grazing can help increase plant diversity in grasslands by preventing one type of plant from taking over.
