Willow spiling is a popular method in the UK for protecting riverbanks from erosion. By weaving long willow canes around poles, the structures become stronger over time. This method not only stabilizes the riverbanks but also benefits the environment and local communities. Out of 140 projects, 59% were very successful, 30% partially failed, and 11% failed completely. Failures could have been prevented by better understanding site conditions, proper installation, using high-quality willow, and timely repairs.
