Revolutionary Aerogel Thermal Insulation Eliminates Liquid Nitrogen in Space Launch Vehicles
Aerogel beads were used to improve thermal insulation for space launch vehicles, specifically the space shuttle external tank's liquid hydrogen intertank. Tests with liquid helium showed that aerogel reduced nitrogen mass and eliminated free liquid nitrogen. Aerogel beads can absorb about 62% of liquid nitrogen. The insulation effectiveness of aerogel helps prevent heat transfer and enhances thermal protection systems on launch vehicles.
