Antarctic Bottom Water Ventilation Revealed: Impact on Global Ocean Circulation
The Southern Ocean's Atlantic sector produces Antarctic Bottom Water, which sinks and circulates in the deep ocean. Previous studies had conflicting estimates of how much water is ventilated and circulated. This study combined different methods and found that 8.7 million cubic meters of dense water are exported northward, with 55% being well-ventilated. Most of this water comes from the Weddell Sea. This research helps us better understand how Antarctic Bottom Water is formed and circulated in the ocean.
