Groundwater levels in North Carolina hit record lows, threatening water supply.
Groundwater levels in North Carolina were monitored from 1988 to 1990 in 59 key wells and 112 supplementary wells. Shallow aquifers were well-recharged by precipitation in 1989 and early 1990, but heavily pumped Coastal Plain aquifers experienced declines. Record low water levels were observed in several aquifers, with maximum annual declines averaging 3.3 to 9.0 feet per year. Water withdrawals from major pumping centers in the Coastal Plain were shown to impact groundwater levels.
