The article discusses how social work practice research has made significant progress in scientifically proving the effectiveness of social services. It outlines a set of First Principles of Practice Research to guide researchers in designing and conducting practice experiments. The goal is to help consumers of research evaluate the quality of these studies. The article also encourages advocates of qualitative research to provide similar examples of research on social work outcomes and develop clear guidelines for conducting qualitative studies.
