Alternate furrow irrigation boosts wheat yield and saves water in China
Winter wheat in northern China can be grown more efficiently with alternate furrow irrigation (AFI). A study compared AFI with traditional irrigation methods and found that AFI led to lower water usage during grain filling, resulting in higher water use efficiency. Despite a decrease in biological yield, AFI maintained similar grain yields as traditional methods. Overall, AFI is recommended for achieving good grain yields while reducing water consumption in winter wheat cultivation.
