The study looked at how char helps destroy tar during the burning of rice straw. They found that more char means less tar, but the relationship isn't straightforward. Different types of tar molecules are destroyed in different ways. Washing the rice straw also affects how much tar gets destroyed. The structure of the char, like the oxygen it contains, plays a big role in breaking down tar.
