Reservoir-induced earthquakes threaten communities worldwide, new study reveals.
Reservoir-induced seismicity happens when filling a reservoir causes earthquakes. At first, there are more and bigger earthquakes, then they decrease over time. The size of the reservoir and how much the water level changes affect the earthquakes. Deeper and larger earthquakes happen with longer period water level changes. The earthquakes can occur under the reservoir and around it, depending on the faults in the area.
