The article introduces two new ways to organize complex data types like spatial and multimedia data. These methods, called multiple entry indexing and double indexing, allow different parts of a complex object to be indexed separately. The researchers implemented these techniques in a database system called SECONDO and found that they improved performance in experimental tests.
