Warm Arctic, Cold Eurasia: How Internal Variability Shapes Winter Temperatures
The recent opposite trends in winter temperatures over the Barents–Kara Seas and central Eurasia are influenced by internal variability, not just climate change. The warming over the Barents–Kara Seas is mainly due to local sea surface temperature changes, while the cooling over central Eurasia is linked to a specific atmospheric circulation pattern. These trends are a result of a combination of factors, including high sea surface temperatures and changes in the winter Arctic Oscillation index.
