Conservation tillage boosts crop yields in Iran's dryland farming.
Dryland winter wheat and chickpea crops in northwest Iran were studied under different tillage systems. The researchers found that minimum tillage gave the highest wheat yield, while no tillage with or without residue was best for chickpea. Reduced tillage resulted in higher yields for both crops compared to conventional tillage. Overall, no and minimum tillage systems significantly increased wheat yield, and no-tillage significantly improved chickpea yield. These findings suggest that conservation tillage methods can replace traditional plowing, leading to higher crop yields and potentially better soil quality in the long run.
