Maize gene discovery sheds light on evolution of plant structures
The zrp3 gene in maize is active in the roots and coleorhiza during early growth. ZRP3 mRNA is not present in dry seeds but accumulates in roots and coleorhiza 1.5 days after germination. In roots, ZRP3 mRNA is found in specific tissues, while in coleorhiza, it is only in parenchymal cells. This shows that roots and coleorhiza share molecular similarities, supporting the idea that they are related organs.
