Newly Discovered Copepods Devouring Sea Anemones, Threatening Ecosystem Balance
Copepods living on sea anemones in California were studied in the field and lab. They belong to the Doridicola genus, with four new species identified. These copepods were found on various sea anemones, living on the column and tentacles, likely feeding on the host tissue. They are very specific to their hosts, spending their whole lives there except for the nauplius stages. They reproduce a lot and have a short lifespan, with many generations per year.
