White-rot fungi produce enzymes that break down lignin, a tough plant material. Different fungi make different combinations of enzymes, like laccase and peroxidases. Some fungi are better at breaking down lignin, while others are more selective. The most efficient lignin degraders belong to a group that produces lignin and manganese peroxidases. Fungi that produce manganese peroxidase and laccase are good at breaking down lignin but not as efficient. Fungi that produce lignin peroxidase and laccase do not break down lignin well.
