Abandoned oil wells in Oklahoma leaking methane, posing environmental threat.
Abandoned oil and gas wells in northeastern Oklahoma were studied to measure methane emissions. The researchers found that methane was leaking from 45 out of 175 wells tested, with rates ranging from 0.1 to 3.3 liters per minute. This data will help improve estimates of methane emissions from abandoned wells, which can have environmental impacts due to their ability to release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
