The study aimed to use digital maps of soil properties to simulate water balance and plant growth in southern Portugal. Two methods were used to create these maps, one using national soil data and the other using existing soil maps. The maps were made at two different levels of detail. The results showed that using local data for soil properties led to a more accurate representation of how water moves through the soil in the study area.
