Incompatible Pear and Quince Metabolites: Potential Threat to Crop Growth.
The researchers studied how pear and quince plants interact when grown in the same environment. They found that quince releases substances that strongly inhibit pear growth, while quince is not affected by substances released by pear. Adding certain compounds found in quince to the environment killed pear plants and inhibited quince growth. The incompatibility between pear and quince does not require direct contact between the plants and can happen at any stage of their development.
