Interspecific competition induces plant plasticity, altering species coexistence dynamics.
Plant interactions can affect how different species coexist. This study looked at how plastic responses in plants, caused by interactions with other plants, can change how they interact with their own kind. By transplanting plants and inducing plastic responses with different types of neighbors, the researchers found that plants exposed to different species initially had positive effects, but later became more competitive with their own kind. This suggests that interactions with other species can indirectly help plants coexist by changing how they interact with their own species.
