Coal Burning Responsible for Half of China's Deadly Air Pollution
Coal burning in China significantly contributes to the high levels of fine particle pollution (PM2.5) in the air. Industrial coal burning is the main source, followed by power plants and households. In 2013, coal combustion accounted for 40% of PM2.5 levels in major cities nationwide, with even higher contributions in the Sichuan Basin. During summer, coal burning contributed 46% to PM2.5 levels, while in winter, it was 35%. Domestic coal burning decreases in summer, but industrial and power plant coal burning remain consistent throughout the year.
