Bioaccumulation of toxic pollutants in eel linked to pollution levels.
The scientists studied pollution levels in sediments and eel in Amsterdam. They found that certain pollutants like PCBs and DDTs increased in eel tissues with higher pollution levels in sediments. Biomagnification played a big role in the accumulation of these pollutants in eel. Some pollutants, like HCHs and heptachlor compounds, had low accumulation in eel. The accumulation of PCDF and PCDD congeners was very low in eel. Different sites showed variations in accumulation, suggesting factors like diet and compound availability influence bioaccumulation. PCB toxic equivalent values were higher than PCDF/ D TEQs at the most polluted site.
