Snowmelt decline threatens summer water supply in Czechia.
Snowmelt plays a crucial role in the seasonal runoff and summer low flows in Czechia. A study analyzed 59 mountain catchments from 1980 to 2014 to understand how changes in snow storage impact runoff. Results show that despite less snowfall than rain, snow contributes more to runoff. In years with less snow, there is lower groundwater recharge and earlier snowmelt, affecting summer baseflow. This suggests that summer low flows are not just due to low precipitation and high evapotranspiration, but are also influenced by winter snowpack. As snowfall decreases in the future, summer low flows may intensify.
