Geostatistics uses random functions to analyze data spread out in space. The methods were first used in mining and petroleum exploration by Matheron and have since become part of mainstream statistics. Geostatistics includes linear and multivariate methods, as well as nonstationary, nonlinear, and simulation techniques.
