Offshore detached breakwaters can help control wave energy but have little impact on longshore currents. These breakwaters trap over 50% of sediment moving along the beach, leading to more accurate predictions of sediment transport rates. By using a local sediment transport model, researchers found a better way to estimate sediment movement around the breakwater compared to traditional formulas.
