Grasslands suffer, forests thrive: Hot temperatures reshape ecosystems.
Hot temperature extremes are increasing faster than average temperatures, impacting vegetation production differently in grasslands and forests. A study analyzed data from 12 sites and found that higher maximum temperatures reduced grassland production but increased forest production, even when accounting for precipitation effects. Arid grasslands saw a 16% decrease, mesic grasslands a 7% decrease, and forests a 5% increase in aboveground net primary production. Forests showed a strong positive relationship between production and maximum temperatures. This suggests that as temperatures rise, grasslands and forests respond differently in terms of vegetation growth.
