Climate models reveal worsening heatwaves and floods across Europe
Increasing the resolution in climate simulations can help predict future heatwaves, heavy rainfalls, and strong winds in Europe better. The study compared high-resolution regional models with coarser global models to see which is more accurate. They found that higher resolution improves the depiction of intense rain in areas with complex landscapes, but it doesn't impact heatwaves much except in mountainous regions. The models also showed that coastal regions have stronger winds at finer resolutions, spreading them farther inland. The research concludes that the differences in climate model accuracy with resolution are mainly due to the downscaling effect in the simulation.
