Legume cover crops can replace nitrogen fertilizers for sustainable corn production.
Crop rotation with cover crops can help maize plants get nitrogen from both fertilizer and cover crop residues. Legume cover crops can provide as much nitrogen to maize as 80-108 kg/ha of urea fertilizer. Maize plants can use about 43.5% of the urea nitrogen applied. Legume cover crops can replace more than 80 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilizer for corn production, which is good for the environment and saves money.
