Genetic breakthrough: German Shepherds to have lower hip dysplasia risk!
The study estimated the heritability of hip dysplasia in German Shepherd Dogs in Finland. They used a method called Restricted Maximum Likelihood on data from over 10,000 dogs. Factors like birth month, screening age, and sire's origin were considered. The study found that hip dysplasia has a moderate heritability of 0.31–0.35. This means that genetics play a significant role in the condition, allowing for better breeding programs with proper evaluation methods and selection processes.
