Thirsty Crops Drain Tehran's Water Supply, Threatening Sustainability
This study investigated how much water is used to grow crops in Tehran Province from 2008 to 2015. They calculated something called the Water Footprint, which shows how much water each kilogram of a crop needs. The findings revealed that crops like pistachios, cotton, walnuts, almonds, and wheat require a lot of water to grow. In 2015-2016, there was a serious shortage of blue water for agriculture in Tehran. The study suggests that the current way of using water for farming in Tehran is not sustainable and contributes to severe water shortages. To improve the situation, they recommend reducing the water needed to grow crops in the region.
