UN peacekeeping operations have faced challenges in meeting the expectations set by its founders. From 1948 to 1988, only thirteen peacekeeping missions were authorized by the UNSC, despite numerous wars happening. Cold War pressures played a role in this limited record. Today's peacekeeping missions are more complex, involving more than just maintaining peace but also building it.
