Marine protected areas (MPAs) are important for protecting marine life. A new way to measure how well MPAs are working was developed. This method looks at both individual MPAs and how they work together as a network. When applied to Australia's MPA network, it showed that while progress has been made, more protection is needed for marine biodiversity. By focusing on areas where extractive activities are limited, the value of the MPA network can be greatly increased.
