Highly selective fishing method threatens yellowfin and bigeye tuna populations.
A study looked at a type of fishing that targets albacore tuna, yellowfin tuna, and bigeye tuna in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The fishing method was found to be very good at catching albacore tuna, with most of the catches being this species. Yellowfin tuna made up a small percentage, and bigeye tuna made up a bit more. The size of the fish caught increased with deeper depths. Hooks placed at certain depths were more effective at catching fish. The best depth for catching fish efficiently was around 167.57 meters. Hooks placed between 124 and 211 meters deep caught the most fish. The fish caught were in good condition when captured.
