The concept of sovereignty has evolved over time, with different ideas emerging in the Middle Ages. Initially, international law focused on state sovereignty, but in the 20th century, popular sovereignty became important through the principle of self-determination. State sovereignty and popular sovereignty are now closely linked. Despite predictions of the decline of the State and the rise of supranationalism, sovereignty remains strong and has transformed over time.
