Barrier islands at risk of drowning due to sea-level rise.
Barrier islands are vulnerable to sea-level rise, but we don't fully understand how they respond. The BRIE model helps by simulating how barrier islands change over time. It considers things like sediment transport, inlet dynamics, and flood-tidal delta deposits. The model shows that tidal inlets can open, close, move, and merge due to sea-level rise and overwash. It also reveals that barrier islands can drown if sea-level rise is too fast for them to keep up. Overall, the BRIE model gives us a better idea of how barrier islands might flood or erode in the future.
